My favorite section is from downtown Frankfort, to Ridgland Ave. This is a wooded section, offering some protection from the wind. The trail takes on a different look without the leaves on the trees, as it reveals the terrain, not normally seen in the spring and summer. It has a beauty of it's own. I always take a camera, since the wildlife is abundent all through the OPRT corridor. Deer frequent the trail, and can show up at the oddest places.

Hiking in the winter can be fun, but it's the time to take certain precautions. The trail is usually far less traveled. Always dress in layers. Wear the proper footwear, gloves and headgear. Hypothermia is always a threat in the winter months, and it can happen at 50° so beware, it is a silent killer. Many outdoorsmen, hiker, and hunter, have succumbed to hypothermia. Take along some snacks, like jerky, Power bars, cookies, etc. It pays to eat properly to fuel your internal furnace. It keeps you warm, and energetic. Fluids are also recommended, There are insulated water bottles available. I prefer and small thermos with warm liquids. A small day pack is recommended if you are going on a long day hike. It can be filled with, food, water, extra socks, gloves, just to mention some useful items.

Some basic surival gear is always a plus. Just because you are close to town, doesn't mean you can't get into trouble. A twisted ankle, can keep you from walking, which can strand you a mile from any crossroad. A survival whistle, can warn others close by that you are in trouble, or need help. I use a fanny pack with basic survival gear all year long, it's just good old common sense. Another suggestion is a mini survival kit. These are constructed using an Altoid Mints tin case, and can be made up at home. Search the internet using Google for "Mini Survival kit", or "Altiod tin survival kits", and see what is recommended it these kits. One can be tailored for your use.

Cell phones are another plus, but always know where you are located. This helps in an emergency. Between what roads and near what milepost? There are markers on the trail, and a good two section map is available on http://oprt.org/ . Study the map, it is most useful in knowing your location.

The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy your hike. It can be a rewarding experience, and keep you in shape for the upcoming year of cycling!

See you on the trail...

Survival Kit Ideas - http://www.equipped.com/1personkits.htm Hypothermia - http://www.abc-of-hiking.com/first-aid/hypothermia.asp

I have busy with work and other situations, and have neglected this blog. For that I apoligize.

Winter is upon us, and except for only the extremely brave cyclists, most of us are warm and toasty inside, hiding from the effects of cold and snow.

Now is the time to properly store the cycle.

Clean it thoroughly, and lubricate it to keep any rust from working it's magic!

Give it a good inspection, and consider replacing any wore parts before spring.

It's best to hang your cycle from the frame, and keep tire tires off of the ground, or invert it and place it on the handlebars and seat.

Try to keep the tires inflated to 80% of their normal pressure.

If you store your cycle where it is unheated, you can cover it with a old bed sheet or blanket, but I would not recommend using plastic sheeting or a poly tarp. If mositure from condensation appears under the tarp or plastic sheeting, it will not disipate, and the mositure will wreak havoc on your cycle. It's best to cover your cycle with a breathable material.

Pray for spring!

Winter is a good time to plan your 2006 cycling activities! The internet is a excellent place to find new trails, explore new cycling events, and to keep abreast of new products. I enjoy reading "Cycling Weblogs". These are maintained by individuals who have gone the long distance of riding across their state, across the country, and even around the world. I started reading "Show Me America" by Jim Damico, who took a 10,000 mile journey, to raise money for an Endowment fund, named after his cousin, who passed away while Jim was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Google is a good search engine to look for cycling events, and trails. Or use your favorite search engine to keep atuned to the upcoming year, it will get here sooner than you think...

Back from Vacation

Back in the saddle again! I usually ride in the a.m. but since this was Sunday I decided to try an afternoon/evening ride. Very few people were on the trail, and the weather was picture perfect. The photo was taken heading west from Ridgeland Ave. towards Harlem Ave. showing the tree tunnel that surrounds the trail.

The signs of fall are on the horizion. Apples and choke cherries litter the trail. Soon come the dreaded walnuts in there green husks. Dangerous to the welfare of all cyclists, either by being crowned on the head, or hitting one on the trail. I've listened to a few stories from seasoned riders, on their meetings with these hard rock like hazards. Many a fall is attributed the mighty walnut. So beware!

Down Time

Well I found the problem as to why the chain kept rubbing the inside of the front derailleur, on my main mount. I carry my wallet, cell, and sunblock for convenience. This way they stay with me, and I don't have to "dig them out" of my seat bag when I need to use them. You don't have to carry a wallet, maybe you only need an ID. I like to carry a little cash, for a Power Bar if I need it, and some extra water when necessary. When my soul mate rides with me, it's used for butter pecan ice cream inside a chocolate waffle cone, at "The Creamery" in Frankfort. They have some good tasting ice cream!

I think my tube and toolbag, cost me $3.00 on sale at Dave's bike shop. Shop around, I do. It was a small seat bag, and I placed it on the handlebars, and wrapped the strap around the headset, as pictured above. I do not promote any one bike shop. I was there and it was a reasonable buy. It worked for our two bikes at a total cost of 6 dollars. I think all of our LBS have something to offer, and I visit them all, from time to time. Nashbar and REI are also some good on-line web sites to shop at. Looking doesn't hurt.

What I mentioned here works for me, you might have different needs, and ideas. Make a list of what you think you need, and then figure on how to carry it. Basic things at first. Find a bag to fit these items into. Your needs will probally change as you ride more often.

I truck my bike to the trail, and keep a towel inside for the unexpected times in the rain. Keeping a clean t-shirt handy is also a good idea. Extra water in your vehicle is also a good idea. If you get wet on the trail and have to drive home, you will really appreciate the towel and extra shirt. Nothing like wet clothes to have on, when you sit in you seat to drive home. The trail tracks up your back does wonders for the upholstery. :-)

Don't get stuck on the trail with out a plan. Now is the time to think about it. Not when your broke down. Good planning gives you ease of mind, and makes the experience more enjoyable. most of all have fun!

Flats are a fact of life

Flats are a fact of life, I use heavy duty inner tubes, and they are three times thicker than a standard tube. Thorn resistent is their claim. I haven't had a flat in over a year since I started using them. I had two flats in two months before switching.

Keeping your tires inflated to the proper setting is a key to less flats. Many come from pinching the tube inside the tire/rim, from improper tire pressure. If the pressure is too low, it allows the tube to become pinched between the tire and rim when hitting a bump, pinching a hole in the tube. Besides it makes for more rolling resistence of the tire. I.E harder to pedal. I ride at least ten miles out, and am restricted to a time limit, since I work in the afternoon. I ride in the mornings, and if I get a flat, I do not want to have to walk 9 miles to get back to my vehicle. Pushing a bike with a flat tire, could get real tiring after the fifth or sixth mile...

A new spare tube, tire levers, and a patch kit are in my bag, along with Allen wrenches to fit the bolts on my mount. A small flat hex handle screwdriver, with a phillips at one end, and a slotted tip at the other. And of course, a small open/box end wrench to fit the ajustment nuts on my cables. Everything else is quick release.

I tried to amass a common sense approach, to being light weight. It took a while to figure what I needed to take with me, and I still learn from every ride. Experience is the key. There are some solid tips, from the more experienced, on the internet. Use your favorite search engine, and type in "cycling tips", or "bicycle tips". These web sites will give you many useful ideas, and start you on the road to "safe cycling".

Another New Experience!

Well it was getting pretty warm today, and like the forgetful old man that I am, I didn't pay too much attention to the wind direction. I reached the I-57 overpass and did a turn around. Stopped to stretch my legs and rehydrate.

Now I notice the wind, and it is going to be in my face on the way back. Funny it didn't seem this windy when I started. I noticed the clouds blowing straight up, but since we cannot seem to buy any rain I didn't think to much about it. So I mount up and start my trek back. Wind was a come and go thing, mostly come with a little go.

I had to drop down a gear while I was out in the open, moving through the Prairie between Central and Ridgeland Ave's. Once it the trees it died down and back up into the rhythm. It started getting dark ahead as I crossed Harlem Ave., I smiled and told myself I couldn't get that lucky. Down through "Troll Hollow" as I call it at mile post 7, I think it might blow over.

Guess again! I go another 500 yards and it starts to rain! Not a sprinkle, or a drizzle, I mean it rains! As I cross Pfeiffer Road there are three construction worker sitting under the shelter, and as I go pass one says, "feels good don't it", and I agree. I keep riding since I'm soaked and there is no need to stop now, and he was right, it does feel good! As I cross the next intersection at the housing area, Bam! Lighting and a close shot of thunder, it took me by surprise! Now I feel in danger, as I'm a sitting duck, so I speed up and the cadence increases as I head for shelter. Frankfort is close and I keep up the rhythm. Finally I reach the Train Depot, and lift my mount upon to the deck and under the roof, as it keeps raining.

I retrieve my cell from inside my seat bag. It is lined with a foam rubber sleeve and it seems to have kept the contents dry. I call my better half who is on her lunch hour , and she tells me it's sunny and hot in Shorewood, go figure. I inform her it's actually raining in Illinois! As the rain slacks off back to the trail I go to finish the ride. Low and behold as I get near Schoolhouse Road, the sun's out in full force and the heat is back. Trails dry and I'm heading for the landing pad.

I learned a few things today as to what's good the carry with you, in case of a sudden down pour. I will give my thoughts in a post later this week.

Good Rid'in!

Jim's New Ride

I ran into Jim, and looked over his new "Tri-Bent". Had some rain over night. Starting from Schoolhouse Road the trail was damp to wet in spots. As I progressed out of the tree tunnels, the trail became dry with a few puddles here and there. Some light derbis from the trees littered the trail. Nothing major.

I made my turn around at the I-57 overpasses, and was on my way back when I heard a decisive "Pop", and as I peddaled on my inner sense told me that that didn't sound good! Either something broke or I picked up something off of the trail and it got wrung around my rear wheel. So I stopped to find out what the sound was. I looked and didn't see anything. I lifted the rear wheel off of the ground, and spun it. Whoa, I said. The rear wheel was out of true, and on my pre-ride inspection it was ok. I started checking spokes and sure enough, one broke. I wrapped it around another two spokes and away I went.

I was 7 miles from my transportation, and was hoping that this didn't repeat itself on the way back. I didn't rip up the asphalt on the rest of the ride and slowed down, especially on the hard bumps. No problem, and off to LBS for repair. One thing to keep in mind about the summer moths is if you want it fixed at a LBS, it might be a couple of days before you get it back. Summer is premimun repair months and many are really busy, don't put it off until the day you want to ride. At least give them a call to see how long the repair will take.

Bent Tandem - Side by Side

Here is a different kind of tandem. This is just a precautionary note. It is between Ridgeland Ave. and Central Ave. Nice sunny warm day, temperture is in the 90° range. The trail is in excellent condition. There is a new park, with access from the trail between Harlem Ave. and Pfieffer Road. They were rolling out the access trail as I passed it today.

Plenty of bikes on the trail today, even though it was heading towards the 90° range. I met up with another rider, whose name was Dave and was riding on a Gary Fisher MTB. We rode together from Harlem Ave to Joliet Road, and had a good conversation. Nothing better than meeting new people.

Vacations Over!

Well the weeks vacation is over and now its time to get back into the swing of things. Spring was a weird one with too many windy or rainy days.. 20 mph head winds are not what I call riding days.

I also have to finish working on the conversion of the Raleigh Technium 12 speed, from a bent over racer to a upright riding machine. We worked in the garage and yard, and toyed with my Harley. So towards evening my wife tells me she has to go and feed her sister's fish, and water her sisters plants. Sissy and her newly retired husband has gone "walk about" in Missouri. (New to retirement, not a new husband...)

So I told her I would wait to cook the brats, until she got back. So I relaxed, and listened to some Island music, dreaming of our next Caribbean Vacation. Now a thought came to mind, and believe me, on a warm sunny Sunday, thoughts are hard to come by. I says to me, get out that old Raleigh Sprite, pump up the tires and check her out. This was a gift from a co worker of mine who graciously picked a pair of these bikes (1 man and 1 woman, matched set, brown original Sprite 5 speeds) that were wheeled to the street on garbage day! Discarded and left for a good crushing. I thanked him and stuck them in the garage for further scrutiny.

Well lets check out the Mans Model, I sez's to meself. Now these are some real flat tires. Out comes the pump, 50 lbs in each wheel. Now for the spin test. Hmmm not bad, a little side wobble, but minor. So I hops on it and take her out to the street, feeling it out, and frantically trying to lower the gear. Whew high gear is rough. Back to the garage for a seat adjustment, (Lower the nose) and raise the handle bars and headset. Now were cooking with gas...

Off I go the the street, and up to the corner. Hard right and a few pumps and, Man! does this thing glide! No peddling and it's like going downhill forever. So's I try it again, and again, and again. Neighbors think I'm nuts as I go around and around. Like a kid with a new toy.

So home comes the wife and I send her out with this toy, and shes comes back and sez's, man! does that thing freewheel!!!

Might be from the 70's, but they built them really good back then. Over 30 years old, and I'm impressed. It needs a little polish and shine, but it's my new around town cruiser. In fact, I'm thinking of taking this one to Branson with me next week, for Operation Homecoming. This is an excellent nostalgia piece, for the Vietnam Veterans Homecoming. What better than a bike right out of the early 70's...

Memorial Day Ride

What a beautiful day for a long leisurely ride with my soulmate. We loaded up the bikes for transport to Channahon State Park, where locks 9 & 10 are. When we arrived we could not locate a parking space anywhere. As we exited the park at the main entrance, a gentleman on the corner sitting on his porch called out to my mate, telling her we could park on their grass! I stopped and backed up onto the side of the road on the grass as he instructed. I thanked him for letting us use his property. He smiled an said anytime. Good people still abound in this world. As we were unloading our bikes, he and his wife were telling others being turned away for no parking availability, to back up onto their grass. What a nice couple!

As we started to enter the park this seemed like a holiday from a long time ago! Everyone was out enjoying the day, and they all seemed so happy. Picnics, fishing, playing, biking, and hiking. It doesn't get any better than this. It was in the lower 70's with a gentle breeze. The sun lazily sliding in and out of the white billowy clouds, that were marking the sky, like an oil painting of the mind...

So off we went. There were quite a few people out on the trail, but this is usually the case between Channahon and McKinley Woods. About three miles apart with plenty of activity at both areas. Once you go past the woods it thins out. We rode out to Aux Sable Access to the Locktenders house. We took a few rest periods along the way. One at the woods, and one at the dam, adjacent to the Mule Barn, then on to Lock 8, and Aux Sable Access. We claimed victory, and rested on a park bench, doing some people watching. I found out that I had left my memory card in my card reader back home. Drat no pics today! There is a water fountain right on the trail next to the bench. It is hard to fill water bottles from it, but you can get enough to keep you going to the next water stop. I suggest carrying a collapsible camp cup to use in these situations. It can help you fill your water bottles if need be. So much for the chatter, we saddled up to return. On the ride back, we stopped a few extra times to watch the barges and boats on the river. Also we were trying to obtain a better fit for the misses. It seemed to work out better for her, but time will tell.

The trail is in good condition, with very little derbis, and the wild flowers are blooming. What a nice ride. All in all we rode 19 miles, and it took us 3 hours of enjoying the scenery. This is such a nice section of the trail. I like it from Channahon to Seneca. I haven't had the pleasure to travel any father but will try and finish the trail trail this year, as time permits. The only hazard we saw, was a dip in the trail that has been plaguing it for a while. I think it gets washed out, but is well marked by signs on both approaches, east and west. Take heed to these signs. Sometimes the sun can blind this dip as I have had the experience to be suprized by it last year. It is on the river side of the trail, so when the sign approaches stay to the canal side of the trail and use caution.

The next time I ride this section of the trail, I will be sure to bring along my memory card and shoot some pictures of the features along this section. I hope everyone had a great day! I know we did...

Joliet Road Crossing

This is traveling Eastbound on the OPRT, just about to cross Joliet Road in New Lenox. Katy Trail in Missouri could very well on it's way to the grave, thanks to a move on Govenor Blunt's part.

For the record the trail is the longest bike/hiking trail in the Rails to Trails genre. It attracts over 350,000 people a year. It is 225 miles long, and covers a good portion of the state from east to west. Economically it is a godsend to the business community along the trail, and the towns adjacent to it. Many bed and breakfast, restaurants, and bike shops rely on it's visitors. Also it is a beautiful trail to transverse.

The bridge is not used by hikers or bikers, and remains in the up position to allow barge traffic to move freely along the river. The trail uses a roadway bridge to allow users to move across the river. Now the problem. In simple leaglize, the Gov has sold the bridge in Boonville back to the Union Pacific RR to be dismantled. Once it is gone the rail line is no longer intact. Big deal you say? It is since it has to remain for the rail line to be intact.

Under federal law, railroad lines no longer needed for active use can be converted to recreational trails, as long as they are "banked" for future restoration as rail lines. This allows the public right-of-way to be maintained. Otherwise, the land would revert to former owners. If there is a break in the line, Kucera said, private property owners along the trail could challenge the state and try to take their property back. Property-rights advocates have vigorously fought trails projects around the country.

From all that I have read it looks like the little guy taking on a Mega Corporation, and it's elected Govenor. Democracy at work in it's finest form! Another uphill battle for the little guy, and that's ok, because America is founded on this concept. All except for one small detail. If you don't have the money, your out of the running. You would think with the economic value the trail brings to the state, that the Gov would have left this one alone. But then again it stirs speculation, when you review what Union Pacific has dontated to the Gov's agenda, it makes one think, that something stinks, in Missouri.

To read further on this see: http://www.waveflux.net/archives/001613.php

Wandering the World - Jim Damico

On a cold winters night in January, I ran across a cycle travel log written by Jim Damico called "Show Me America" . I was hooked! It took me two nights to finish it, and when I was done I wanted to read more. This man has resolve. Not only does he go from coast to coast, but keeps going on, to finally cover 9,720 miles, in a fund raising effort directed to the Nancy Johnson- Coyle Endowment Fund that was established as a memorial to his cousin at Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas. She died after a long illness while studying at TWU.

The log was written and posted while he was on his quest, by using computers at local libraries along his route. It is a frank account of people he met, problems that arose, personal insight and struggles both physical and mental, and adventure! Pure and simple. What amazed me most was the people he met along the way. It restored my faith in the human race, in a sense that there are still kind, trusting, helpful, and honest people left out there in America!

I don't mean to cynical, but lately it seems that in my neck of the woods, it's the "leave me alone, and don't bother me" kind of humans that I run into, especially on the urban trails. I always tell my wife maybe it's the beard and tattoos, that scare them... I am a friendly person and like to greet most people I meet, but a lot of them stare at the ground, or ride by like they couldn't be bothered. Although this doesn't discourage me as I have met several nice people along the trails, and continue to chat with them as we meet. Sometimes it good to ride with them, and enjoy good conversation.

So if you like to read about other cyclists adventures, go to Jim's web site and see the places he has traveled, I don't think you will be disappointed.

wanderingtheworld.com

I&M Canal - Channahon

This is the trail going West from Channahon State Park. He was a formable challenge to Armstrong, in last years Tour de France. Dainelson dropped out of the Giro with a knee problem. I hope this is a minor injury, as he is a up and coming American cyclist. Another exciting team member is Jose Azevedo. He is such a powerful climber as he proved last year in the Tour de France. I knew this was my first flat tire on the OPRT. Well I stopped as fast as I could to keep from damaging the rim on my new bike. I summed up how fast the leak was. PDF! So I resigned myself to swapping out the tube, with the spare I had along. Faster to swap than fix.

To work I went loosening, pulling, twisting, and replacing. Then as I was finishing up the job, an older gentleman stopped and asked if I had any trouble. I replied that I seemed to have picked up some glass but it was under control. This was the first person on the trail that had said more than one word to me since I started. He introduced himself as "Partee". We started to chat and review each others mounts when up pulled another rider. Partee introduced me to the new arrival, and his name was Jim. Well in five minutes I have met two fellow riders, all because I had a flat. It seemed amazing that three weeks produced a few nods and several friendly hellos, but here I was having an all out conversation with not one rider but two! Realigning the tire on the rim to my satisfaction, and then topped off the tire with 60 lbs of clean fresh air. Flipped the bike over and took a breather.

Conversation was light and cheery, as I learned how many miles Jim had ridden so far this year, and small talk of the trail. I said it was time that I had to start back, and have a time table to meet, so I can prepare for work. (2nd Shift Person) Jim said he was on his way east, and we said our goodbyes. Partee was going my way, so we decided to ride together. I learned that Partee was retired and in his early 70's. He looked pretty fit to me, and I found out that he had been riding the trail for a while. We peddled and talked, and I was enjoying his company. Pretty soon we reached Schoolhouse Road and he said he should probably turn back as he hadn't been this far in a while. Well he then said a little farther wouldn't hurt as we rode on and chatted about everyday life and of course Biking.

We were approaching Lions Den Park in New Lennox, and he told me about a friend who used to live close by and used to ride the trail. We came to the stop sign and Partee said it was the end of the line for him. We stopped and shook hands. I told him I had really enjoyed his company, and the conversation. I told him that I hoped we could do it again. We parted as I rode west and Partee rode back east. As I rode on towards the end of the trail for me, I couldn't help thinking that this is what life was all about for me. Being outside in nature, meeting other people, and enjoying each others company, and having pleasant conversation. It was like I knew him for a long time. I looked forward to the next meeting, and there were a several.

I haven't come across Partee yet this year, as I have been riding later in the day until I get on my summer schedule, both mentally and physically. Afternoon shift in the winters, is an all night thing. Spring and summer I love to be outdoors, and switch to a earlier schedule so I can get the most out of the sun filled days. Hence earlier days on the trail.

I have met several people on the trail through my rides with Partee, some names I remember, some have slipped away from me, but I remember the faces. I hope to see my friend soon, and continue on riding and conversing with him. It does make me feel that we are all connected to each other in some manner, you just have to be open and willing to see and accept the invitations, no matter how slight they seem.

Saturday Ride on the OPRT

70° and partly sunny, and I need to ride. I had to acquire a set of tire levers, since down sizing my tire sizes from 1.95 to 1.50. A trip to Sumbaum Cycle, and I obtained 4 levers that were a good fit into my seat bag, and looked like they could handle any tire repairs on the trail. I will not go onto a trail with out the proper tools. I go out to ride, not walk. Flats are a way of life for a cyclist, so be prepared, and yes I was a scout. My round trip mileage average is 20 miles. This is a must, unless the weather, mechanical woes, or my physical condition dictates otherwise. Depending on how I feel, I will usually add to this distance, on a day to day basis.

I arrived at my favorite parking place, which is in New Lennox. Unloaded, mounted up and away I went. I start out easy to warm up, peddling slowly for a while to get the blood flowing and the muscles loose. It was sunny but a slight chill was evident, I knew this wouldn't last, as the warm up faded into a steady cadence. Passing Lions Park, the pace quickens, and I ask myself each time, what are you doing? You could be at home relaxing in the yard with a cool drink watching the barbie. Well I have this discussion each time I go out, with my lazy side. I pushed on knowing it was a losing conversation, and I really do enjoy riding. The trail was quiet and the traffic was light. I stopped at Frankfort Park for a few power bars, and a supply of water. Still very few people were on the trail. This is unusual for Frankfort on a Saturday afternoon with the sun shining.

I rode to Central Avenue and did a turn around. The trail is in excellent condition, with very little debris on it. The flowering trees that are along the path are in full bloom, with no wildflowers yet. I had the wind at my back on the return trip and the sun really came out strong. I saw very few birds along the trail, only 1 Cardinal, and only a few Robins and Finches. Several weeks ago the Cardinals were abundant, especially between Pfeiffer Road, and the Frankfort Park. Seems like they were playing tag with each other. Towards the end of the ride, near Joliet Road I ran across a rider with a flat tire. Offered to help with a repair kit and air pump but he declined, stating he didn't have very far to go. Like I said I hate walking when I can ride.

26-1/2 miles and a slight sunburn was worth the trip. Hopefully the weather will remain warm and the wind will slow down and the 4 days a week riding the trail will commence. I need the workout...

See ya on the trail!

P.S. I love the way it rolls, and the weight is superb. It is in good working condition, and I have rode it a few times thru the hood. I haven't really taken it out on the Old Plank Road Trail, and don't think I will just yet.

My problem is that the seat it really uncomfortable, and I not wild about the body position, when using the roadbars. I am going to change some of these features to accommodate my aging body. Maybe I'm crazy, but a softer seat will be added, for my posterior. I am looking at different handlebars. I enjoy the upright position much better, and I am not looking to break any speed records. Don't get me wrong, I have days where I feel strong after a slow warm up, and gradually I find myself riding in the 15 mph bracket for some time. Some road riders would say this is slow, but considering that I was riding an Aluminum, 30 lb comfort bike, with 1.95 tires on it, I feel this is a decent workout. Let's face it, on the down side of the Rte 45 overpass in Frankfort, in top gear, spinning flat out, has only has put me at the mind bending speed of 23 mph! I'm sure Lance would be impressed, if I was riding backwards...

I also have made a change on my asphalt trail bike, and went with slimmer tires. I purchased a pair of Kenda KWest 1.50 street tires, and replaced the 1.95's. I kept the heavy duty tubes, as OPRT can be contaminated with thorns, and hidden glass at times. Since I changed to the heavier tubes, no flats! So I'll live with the extra weight they add. I hope to gain a little less rolling resistance, since I have been doing a lot of time on paved trails. I want to get a extra set of wheels so I can change over quickly, in the event of new trails, that dish up rougher terrain. I love to try out new locations with my wife, on those Sunday summer afternoons!

This weekend seems to hold some promise of some good warm weather. I hope to see you on the trail...

Branson and the bikes...

Larry called from St Louis today, and gave me the low down on the campground we are staying at for Operation Homecoming in Branson, Missouri in June. I am going to take both bikes (Harley 1200 - 4 speed :-) , and the Del Sol - 21 speed Hybrid). I thought it will be cool to tool around the campground, and maybe through Branson on my HPV. They have a few state parks I will check out, and shoot some pics of the area. I was there once before, but is was a while back, and only for a few hours. We are both going to be sporting our motorcycles for a tour around the countryside. Only where municipalities demonstrated intent with signage or bike facilities could they be held liable.

With this closely fought decision—three of the seven justices bitterly dissented—the court froze or turned back bicycle planning in many Illinois communities, and reduced all bicyclists on Illinois roadways to second-class citizens, denied the same standard of care municipalities grant freely to motorists.

The Chicagoland Bicylce Federation and the League of Illinois Bicyclists have been leading the fight for change in Illinois tort laws that will restore a standard of care for bicyclists on Illinois roadways and allow bike planning in our communities to move forward.

More information on this at:
http://www.biketraffic.org/content.php?id=47_0_11_0

Aux Sable Access - I&M Canal Trail

This is the Lock Tenders House at Aux Sable Access at Lock #8. Nice summer day last year. To the left of this fence is a water fountian, on the east side of the house, right on the edge of the trail. Surface along this section is well groomed limestone screenings. Nice and peaceful, a very enjoyable ride toward Morris. Stopped to have a small picinic here under the trees in the grass. This was a Channahon to Morris and back to Channahon. Conditions are good. Repairs have been made to some serious holes that I have encountered over the last year. New house construction is in the process in a few spots which I will report on in a later post. Water fountain at the park in Frankfort was not turned on yet, as of 4/17/05. I was suprized that there was very little derbis on the trail. I expected more from the winter weather. I have seen some type of brush and tree removal project, of the old tracks in several areas. Nothing on the OPRT website mentions the work, and I do not know if there is a specfic reason for this. OPRT website has not been updated in quite some time. This is a great disappointment as this is a well used, and well liked trail. I will post any changes that I see to the trail as I ride on it this year.
